GL.iNet Travel Router and VPN

A few months ago some Twitter friends both recommended a Travel Router - the GL.iNet GL-AR750S. I have tried a few of these over the years but I have been disappointed with the results. I decided to give it another go and am glad I did.

First, why should you consider getting a Travel Router?

  • You travel frequently with multiple devices

  • You are frustrated with getting onto Hotel wifi (accepting terms every 24 hours)

  • You don’t want to join and keep track of multiple Wifi Hotspots

  • You are concerned about privacy and security

The Travel Router works like this:

  1. You plug in an ethernet cable in the hotel (still available in many hotels)

  2. You connect the Wifi router to the Hotel Wifi (the same way you would connect your iPhone or Laptop)

This now allows you to connect all your devices to the same hotspot. I call mine “Shahine Travel”.

When I travel with my family we have so many devices now.

  • 3 iPhones

  • 4 iPads

  • 2 Kindles

  • 1 MacBook

  • 1 Surface Pro

By setting up the travel router, all the devices just connect to “Shahine Travel” simplifying setup.

I like ExpressVPN because it allows me to use services like Apple TV, Netflix and Disney+ when traveling in another country (where these services often block or restrict access). This is in addition to protecting you from man in the middle attacks.

I have tried a few VPN services - Encrypt.me, TunnelBear and Express. Express is the most reliable and fastest.

Two other tips

  • Use this web page to see what country your IP address is listed from. For Streaming services, it should be in the US

  • Use this web page to connect to wifi when you first join if you are having a problem

I have bookmarked both of these web pages. NeverSSL is super handy to get you connected - in particular on airplane wifi networks such as Gogo.
